A very special guest
It’s not the way she starts every day, but Mints takes me to her local heart-attack vendor for breakfast. It’s got the red leather seats in booths that could’ve popped out of any breakfast diner in a thousand different American films. I’ve definitely been looking forward to an opportunity to have pancakes, and am not disappointed. And bacon and maple syrup - what could...

I'm not even supposed to BE here today!
I wake as Dan and Charlotte are on their way out of the house. She’s having that knee operation today so her next six weeks will be spent on high power painkillers and in a full leg splint. It’s always tough to go into hospital to have an operation when you’re feeling fine, but she’s definitely putting a brave face on it. I wish them well.
Today’s plan is to make a...

"Storm King" is an inappropriately epic name
Today is the last day before Charlotte has her knee operation, so the plan is to make use of our legs and get out of the city. The destination is Storm King, a sculpture park a little over an hour’s drive from Manhattan, where we’ll meet one of Dan’s buddies and take in some epic iron girders. Dan wanders off to pick us up a hire car, so I’m given sandwich and thermos...

Queueing for food in NYC
Saturday starts slowly, the jet lag and the inertia once again being somewhat overwhelming. Finally Dan and I muster the energy to get out of the flat and over to the gallery district, west of 10th near their flat. It’s a neighbourhood that used to be warehouses and the like, which means that now it’s naturally turned quite emphatically into an area for artists. High ceilings and low...

Up the High Line
I land at JFK as the dawn is on the cusp of breaking, the first hints of orange on the clouds out east. The skytrain and the E take me in a crowded and citified way to 23rd and Dan’s abode in the London Terraces. His building is a mighty and glorious 30s apartment complex that occupies an entire block. I arrive for a personal welcome as Dan’s not left for work yet. I get breakfasted,...

A day well spent :-/
For my final day in Vancouver I’m keen to do something calm that’ll ensure I’m safely to the airport on time. Jon and I make plans to go to Granville Island for an evening meal, which should make hopping on to YVR a doddle. Ed, a buddy from back home, has recommended The Deformed Fork (or some similarly fork-themed bistro name), so we even have a destination in mind.
To pass a...

Accidental Trentemøller
On my way out today I turn the corner onto Hastings to see that I’m about to miss the bus by 30 seconds. The next one gets me safely to the Waterfront, where I head straight for the sea bus. I get to the jetty to see that I’m about to miss the boat by 30 seconds. Something’s trying to keep me away from this bridge. Capilano bridge held some record for being the widest span...

Otters have the most hair
Bardface has a day off to enjoy, so we are heading out to the aquarium today. Rik recommend this before he left for the UK so we allot it a good half day to this. It’s set deep in the oranges and yellows of Stanley Park’s woods. The sea otters are fantastic, kept in enclosures where the water is directly supplied from the pacific. They used to be very common in this part of the...
